Import Substitution

This bureau focuses on research, development, technology transfer, and commercialization of innovations targeting domestic production of goods and services, to reduce dependence on importation, boost the value of exports while deepening value addition in the country.  This will require protection and incubation of new and infant industries to fully develop into competitive enterprises.

Textiles, Garments, Leather, Food, Shea butter and School Laboratory Supplies are key entry points that STI has identified for import substitution and export promotion.

We are currently supporting the commercialization and industrialization of products targeted to replace wheat from sweet potatoes, cassava, and banana.

We are working on R&D into production of our local fibers from Cotton, Banana and Pineapples and organizing our local textile and garment industry to substitute imported alternatives.

We are working with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives to identify market needs of potential value added products.
