Infrastructure Innovations

This includes research, development, technology transfer, and commercialization of innovations in energy, railway, roads, airports, nanotechnology and minerals, materials, STI and communication infrastructure, etc. The following key projects are underway:

  1. Gold refining research at Nkozi University using cyanide extracted from cassava to replace toxic mercury;
  2. Tin ore metallization at Luwero Industries as the practical replacement of imported tin in bronze making using tin ore extracted from Ntungamo;
  3. Direct reduction of iron at Makerere University using hydrogen for the beneficiation of iron ore into sponge iron. This is geared toward deriving requirements for the proposed iron ore processing plant in Rubanda;
  4. Making of nanoparticle iron oxide from steel waste for water treatment applications;
  5. Development of functional prototypes of bioelectricity and fertilizer production from wastewater at Gulu University;
  6. Research in the use of agro-processed ethanol as a cheaper additive in fossil fuels and agro-processed biodiesel to strengthen the National energy security portfolio;
  7. Establishment of higher precision sheet metal cutting and forming at Luwero Industries Ltd to enhance our capacity to provide standardized parts for the agro-processing machinery fabrication market. This is aimed at supporting the Parish Development Model through the mitigation of the problems of post-harvest preservation for long storage.

Establishment of the National Science, Technology, Engineering and Innovation Centre and Technology Innovation and Business Incubation Centre (NSTEIC-TIBIC) under Uganda National Council for Science and Technology. These facilities will provide specialized technological support to scientists and innovators and a skill base of Ugandan graduates, craftsmen, technicians and engineers.
